Caterpillars (Lepidoptera) |
Note: Caterpillar id can very difficult! Most of these have been identified
by using the few books available on the subject and lots of help from Dave
Wagner. Others who helped include Bob Barber, Mike Thomas, Jim Tuttle, and Tim McCabe... . Two
fairly new books are useful: -Caterpillars of Eastern North America by Dave Wagner. If you are interested in identifying caterpillars and live in the East, GET THIS BOOK. It is extremely good, and thorough, and also has many moths. (Princeton 2005). -Caterpillars of the Field and Garden by Allen, Brock, and Glassberg. Helpful, with good photos, but has only butterflies and covers all of N America so less useful for any single region in the East (Oxford 2005). -Even newer, Owlet caterpillars of Eastern North America by Wagner, Schweitzer, Sullivan, and Reardon (Princeton 2011) Note that many of the images below are of prepupal caterpillars and their color may change drastically from what is typically depicted in the guides for each species. I have these caterpillars arranged by page number in Wagner, and follow his common names and taxonomy. Ones I still can't identify are in the section at the bottom. Please let me know if you find any misidentified ones or can help with id! NOTE!! I am in software limbo, these pages are built using Front Page which is no longer supported. I have a whole page of new cats from 2013 at this link only, because I'm going to have to rebuild all this from scratch pretty soon it's not worth adding them in: |

1 | Unknown species of Sphecid wasp with
caterpillar prey. The images are in chronological order, top to bottom. 1.
The prey is Naddata gibbosa, the White-dotted Prominent moth. It is
alive but paralyzed. 2. My presence drove the wasp away, but after I became still she came back to retrieve her prize. 3. and 4. Using her large jaws, she picks the entire caterpillar up and runs with it. 5. She puts it back down and goes to make sure the burrow, already dug, is still prepared. 6. and 7. She comes back and carries it right next to the burrow. 8. She removes two plugs of dirt that have been hiding and protecting the burrow. 9. She is completely in the burrow, last check. 10. Satisfied with the burrow, she comes back up to drag the prey in, and she backs in abdomen first. 11. As soon as she gets it situated, she will lay eggs on it, and hurry back up to replug the burrow so nothing else can parasitize her prey or her eggs. 18 Sep 2006, dirt field in Union County, GA |
